What was going on was the primary question rattling around in the six-teen year old Stuar brain as he stood alone in a room after seeing that his sister was here, in Kingslanding as it was being sacked. The young Sunderland leaned over the table looking at a map that had been laid there, markers represented much but much had changed since it was last updated. That didn’t stop the youngster from staring at if from above, willing it to give him answered that it simply could not give. He added a new piece, placing it in the camp with his brothers and watched, as it stood there, motionless. It was to represent his sister, who had just come.

Glancing over his shoulder the squire moved another piece beside her, Kayl, at least in his mind. They had been talking when he left, pushed out by Niclas and now he stood alone with no further answers. His fingers rested upon another piece, one that he had dubbed as himself and slide it gingerly over to the other two before standing up straight and checking that all of his equipment was fastened on correctly. He had been told to stay here and that answers would come but young did not wait, they went out and found what they needed. Sometimes it was called foolishness, other times bravery. The two acts could be identical and be given the separate classifications based one thing. The result. If you succeed then you were brave, if you failed then you had been a fool.

Stuar did not consider himself a fool, but he would have classified himself as brave had he been asked and he was about to prove that now and he tightened the leather that was holding his sword belt and turned towards the exit to the room that he felt prisoner in. The lack of answers was maddening and he needed them answered now. They should be doing something at the very least. The Sunderlands were not weak men, and they should be joining in on the fighting that was happening. It was bad enough that he hadn’t seen Ryon for some time, now he was expected to stand around and wait for answers while his sweet sister was here during war. He felt duty bound to be there with her, to protect her despite being the most junior of his family. He loved all of his siblings of course, but they had all been trained to be here to varying degrees, she was not.

His first step towards the plan he had laid out on the map heralded the fact that the door was more than an exit for him, but also an entrance for it was the one person he wished to see in the entire world that stepped through. Stuar did not waste a breath on words as he strode over to his big sister and wrapped his arms around her tightly as though he were afraid any looser and she may disappear again.

By the gods” he started as he pulled back from the hug to look at her again “what are you doing here? This is no place for a lady!” His voice was outraged, but he hugged her again, this one a little more quickly so that he could get his answer and offer her a seat should she wish to take one. “Is everything okay wish Mother?” he asked concerned. Why else would she have risked coming here? Even if there was bad news about their mother, it was a bad idea that she was here.

That didn’t make sense though…Niclas knew that she was coming.

WHY!? He wanted to scream, but he did not. Instead he did something that was very hard for an adolescent, he waited to hear the explanation that was to be given by Emmelyne. He could only hope that she was forthcoming with the information or he might just explode.

Emmelyne had not been looking forward to having to explain to her brothers what she and Niclas had done, but she had been looking forward to seeing them once more. She had watched their brother be slaughtered before her eyes and all she wanted was to see and hold her brothers close, to know they were safe. Everything she was doing was for their family. She had always known she would marry for the benefit of her family and to raise their status but she had never considered her marriage might be to protect against more death in her family.

She had spoken with Kayl already, him being one of the brothers she was closest to besides Niclas, wanting to tell him the news and also wanting to be able to cry about it to someone. She knew that besides that Stuar was likely to take the news worst. He had been Ryon’s squire and she doubted he would be extremely happy about accepting Jasper as their king let alone welcoming him soon as a good brother. She wondered briefly if he would understand the political motives behind all this but more importantly she hoped Stuar would forgive her for what she was doing.

She had left Kayl after they had talked some and cried some as well, glad that she had been able to break down in his arms. It was the first time she had allowed her composure to crumble since the massacre and it had been much needed. She had to be stronger now, to get her brothers to all understand in their own way her decision to accept the betrothal.

She took in a deep breath before entering where her youngest brother was, knowing she would need to explain herself and her presence. She shouldn’t have been there. Kayl was upset their mother was alone where she had once had their father but Em had had no choice. Her mother was safest in Sisterton and she had needed to come to King’s Landing to see her family and to start to learn more of Jasper Arryn who would soon be her husband.

She didn’t have much time to look around before she felt the arms of her youngest brother around her and her own arms wrapped around him, glad to be holding him and to know he was alive. He was taller she though, but then again all her brothers seemed to grow ever taller. She could remember a time he was much shorter than she was but it seemed like those days were past. Childhood was far behind them all now, especially with what was going on.

He was demanding to know why she was there, telling her this was no place for a lady. Of course it was not, but Jasper had ensured a member of his Moonsguard had been with her and seen her safely to her brothers. The new king was not taking chances with his betrothed it would seem. Besides, it seemed as though most of the fighting had ceased before they had arrives. The pillaging was left as was the chaos in the wake of it all, but the serious fighting was done. On top of that, Emmelyne had been raised around boys. She had been used to places not meant for ladies for awhile, even if she was a true lady at heart.

“Stuar, the war is essentially over. Jasper Arryn has won the Vale and it would seem Robert Baratheon has won the Iron Throne. The fighting was nearly done by the time we arrives,” Emmelyne said softly, hugging him to her once more before letting her hands drop away from him and fold in front of her body. She was tired, dirty from time spent on the road, but none of that mattered. Baths would come later, but now was time for family and family never seemed to care if she was too dirty. “Mother is home in Sisterton and she is safe. She had a guard to escort her home,” Emmelyne assured him. She didn’t add that Jasper had promised her safety and arranged for the guard, it was unimportant at the moment.

Emmelyne took in a deep breath, knowing she had not truly answered why she was there, why she had come to King’s Landing. She looked into the matching blue eyes of her brother for a moment as she slowly exhaled. “I must tell you something; something I do not think you will like but it is something that has been done and cannot be undone,” she said, placing her hands gently on his shoulders, licking her lips for a moment. “Niclas offered my hand in marriage to Jasper Arryn and Jasper has accepted. I am here because Jasper allowed for me to accompany him, knowing how important family is to me and as a chance to better know each other,” she said as she looked to Stuar, careful not to repeat the mistake of calling him King which she had done to Kayl and caused his anger. She needed to see how Stuar would react before saying such things.

JASPER ARRYN!? He thought and just as he was about to express the words verbally his sister hugged him again and so he hugged her back, sure that she needed to comfort from the news that the man that had their father and brother killed as now a king. He was king for the moment but it would not last long, Ryon would regain the throne it was just a matter of time and the Arryn would be put to death where he rightly belonged. Stuar would be there and he would see to it that it happened. The murderer would not get away with his horrendous acts, not in the eyes of the gods, and certainly not in the eyes of Stuar Sunderland who was now but a squire, but was certain to prove his worth when Ryon ascended back to the throne.

His anger nearly made him forget about his questions and why she was here but at least their mother was safe, relatively so. How safe one could be when it came to Jasper Arryn he couldn’t be sure. Guest rights went right out the moondoor with him, and so he might have been willing to attack a widow on her voyage home. He looked at his sister and scratched the side of his neck “I’m glad to hear that Morther is home and safe” he paused blinking because he wasn’t so sure that she was safe but didn’t want to trouble his dear sister with such dark thoughts “and that the both of you made it out.

He blinked looking at his sister, her hand on his shoulder as he returned the look in her eyes. The world tilted slightly as she spoke about needed to tell him something that he wouldn’t like. His immediate thoughts were that something had happened to Ryon, that he was slain and he started to blame himself because he wasn’t here instead of there with him. He hadn’t the chance though as he nodded to tell his sister he was ready to hear what she had to say, not willing to trust his voice to do it. Then the word came out, she was to marry Jasper Arryn…

JASPER GODS DAMN HIM ARRYN!?

The world decided that tilting wasn’t enough and instead spun around the young Stuar’s eyes having trouble focusing on anything as he felt dizzy and the world around him became a much darker and graver place. His stomach squeezed tight and his lungs felt like they were going to burst. He stood there, staring forward at his sister but not seeing her. He wasn’t sure how long it was, a few seconds? Minutes? Days? Months? Decades? He couldn’t place why this was happening as his mind raced for some sort of sense that was coming out of what he was hearing and then trying to figure out why his lungs burned the way they did.

It turned out the young Sunderland had forgotten how the breath and took a deep inhale in but not before his face and ears turned a shade of scarlet. He had been deaf in those moments as well but not his senses came back to him. He could see, hear and think and what he did was take a step back and say “no” in scarce but a whisper. “No” he said louder, unsure if he had said the word the first time or only thought it, the shaking of his head more determined now, his jaw set in utter defiance at the idea. His eyes moistened but he did not let the liquids escape as he choked back the idea of crying.

This isn’t right. No. You can’t do this, Niclas can’t make you, I won’t let him” Stuar’s voice rose as he said it looking towards the entrance of the tent willing his brother to come through the door so that he could give him a piece of his anger filled mind. He grabbed his sisters hands and pleaded with her in his look, pleading for what he couldn’t be sure. Maybe tell him that this was all some sick prank that was being pulled. But she had come here with Jasper which meant… it’s meant the false king was somewhere nearby. In Kingslanding at the very least.

The young squires hands left his sisters and went to his sword hilt as he tried to pull it out his shaking grasp faltered and the blade. Before it could fall he vowed “I will kill him, you will not have to marry him” as he gave way to his anger and let his words come out of his mouth. Even as he found he struggled to pull his sword out first try his confidence and rage did not falter “I will protect you, Emmelyne, you will not have to see that Arryn shit again. We will find KING Ryon and reclaim the Vale with him” He swore, it would have been the first time that his sister ever heard him use a cuss as he was careful about using those words when she was around.

It was just talk, Stuar would have had a much harder time leaving his brothers behind and, even if they were responsible for what was happening but his emotions were all over the place. He felt like lashing out at someone. He felt like hugging his sister for the trials she must have had to endure on her journey here. He felt like running away from it all. He felt like breaking down in the center of the room and crying. But anger was easy to give into and it wouldn’t make him seem weak, and so that is what he chose, though he was not angry and Emmelyne. Never at her.

Emmelyne nodded as Stuar said he was glad mother was safe, and glad they had both made it out alive. She was lucky for that much, even if she had lost her brother and father. Half of the Sunderlands who had attended the Gates of the Moon had escaped with their lives and it was strange and painful, but the past could not be changed. It had to be accepted and she would accept it and move forward. Her mother was back home and she hoped her mother was alright, even if ghosts were haunting her in Sisterton. There was nowhere else she could really have sent their mother and home had to be better than anywhere else.

She could tell her brother was not taking the news that she would marry Jasper well. She hadn’t expected him to, not when he had been the squire for Ryon Dayne and would now be the brother by law to the man who had usurped the Daynes. It was a play for power by Niclas and Emmelyne was all too willing to play along as well. More than that though Emmelyne saw it as a potential to try and bring peace to the war-torn Vale.

She heard the ‘no’ and Em let out a small sigh, already hearing his protests before he even started. “Niclas is not forcing anything, Stuar. I have agreed to the marriage because it is what is best for your family,” Emmelyne said softly. Niclas would never have forced her to marry, she knew that. But in the same vein she also knew that she and Niclas tended to agree on political matters and she would bet a part of him had known that she would agree to marrying Jasper, knowing the benefits that could come from such a marriage.

Stuar began to spoke of killing Jasper and Em shot him a look. They were words that could never be repeated outside this moment in case any other ears might hear. For now it could all be grief, and it was just for her. But his words were treason, and he would need to be careful. “You will not kill him. And you will not speak such words again,” Emmelyne warned him, her voice stern. She took a deep breath in though, to calm herself slightly before looking back to her brother. “You may speak such thoughts in front of me for I am your family. But, Stuar, you must be careful. Jasper is king now and the punishment for treason is death and I cannot lose another brother,” she said to him softly, making sure that in the future he would know the danger of his words.

The curse word from her brother sounded crass and served as a reminder that her dearest Stuar was growing up. She had heard such words before, but never from her baby brother. He was a man grown though and such words should be expected from him now. “I know you would be able to protect me if I needed it, but I will be marrying Jasper Arryn. I will ensure no more Sunderlands will fall to this war. Stuar, it is unknown where Ryon Dayne is. I know how much he meant to you, but he is missing and we must act on what we know now. I know it is not easy, for any of us, but it is what must be done,” Emmelyne said softly to her brother, her hand moving to gently brush some of her brother’s hair away from his forehead. She was not angry with him or his response. She knew it was not easy but she had to try and soothe the wounds she was leaving, or at least try and make him understand.

Frustration, anxiety and anger were boiling together inside of the youngest Sunderland and his thoughts could hardly be kept straight. They rushed from finding Niclas and punching him in the nose (something he would never actually do), to running away with Emmelyne, and of course, killing the faux king in the Vale. Simply accepting it and letting it happen seemed like an impossibility, and he just knew that there was no way this was going to happen. He knew it. Only as his sister spoke he started to realize that it was going to happen and there was little, nay, nothing that he could do about it.

Stuar let go of his sword handle and let his weapon rest in its scabbard as he turned away from Em, afraid to look at her face for fear of another outburst. What of KING Ryon then? Where was he? He hadn’t seen him since he entered the tent at the instruction of his eldest living brother. A calculating move because on the battle field Stuar might have shared the real kings fate, whatever that might have been.

He turned to her at the mention of losing another brother and blinked away the moister that had threated to build up in his eyes and come spilling forth had he not. He wrapped his arms around her again, this hug tighter than the previous. It was as if he were a child again not knowing his own strength. It wasn’t enough to hurt her, but given that he was wearing armor it was likely enough to make it rather uncomfortable.

You won’t” he vowed in regards to losing another brother, he still held her looking at her. He couldn’t imagine what it must have been like for her and mother when it happened. Stuar felt a ping of guilt for not being there, but if he had? He might very well have shared the same fate of his father and brother. In all likelihood he would have.

Ki-“ he started to say King but thought better of it, it was best to try and break the habit sooner rather than later “Ryon is missing?” he asked his gaze traveling to the door as if expecting him to burst through it but he did not. Had he not loved his siblings so much he might have charged out of the tent and went looking for his King, but he could not do that to them. It would at best put them in an extremely awkward position and so he would stay with them, follow their lead and play whatever game they were playing.

But he knew Ryon would be back and things would change.

Stuar took a deep breath and stood up straight, for a moment he probably looked almost like a knight rather than a squire as he nodded his head. “Of course, for the family” he said stoutly his jaw clenched tightly “is that all of the plan?” he asked. He prayed there was more. Gain the trust of the false king and shove a very real sword through his neck?

Emmelyne knew she was asking a lot of Stuar. To ask him to accept the man who had not only killed their family but forced his king out was difficult. She could understand but there was a line that they could not cross. And while Stuar could certainly mourn his losses and be upset with his sister’s marriage, he could not speak negatively of the king. She had to ensure all of her remaining brothers kept their heads for now. She didn’t think Jasper would necessarily kill her brother for saying something off the cuff and in private, she did know she had to be careful.

She felt her youngest brother hug her tightly and though there was a slight discomfort from the armor he was wearing, she did take solace in the hug in itself. It had been too long since she had been with her family and though Kayl had also held her when she had seen him again, she was glad to be held by her brother. It reminded her that around her family she did not need to keep as strong as she was around everyone else. She was trying to get to know her betrothed and to be kind around him, but around her brothers she could mourn her lost family, and she needed to remember that.

He promised her that she wouldn’t lose any more brothers and she let out a soft sigh, her hand going to the back of Stuar’s head and soothing over his hair for a moment, holding him close still. He was the baby of the family and Emmelyne had always felt a slight protective urge over him. She may have watched her brother be slaughtered in front of her face, but Stuar was still the youngest and he deserved to be angry and sad and upset and whatever other emotions he felt and Emmelyne was there for him to do that, as his big sister.

She swallowed as he asked that Ryon was missing and she leaned back from the hug slightly, letting her hands rest on his shoulders. “Yes. Stuar…we do not know where Ryon has gone but likely he has fled. I’m sorry,” Emmelyne said once again to her youngest brother, kissing his forehead gently. There was no news on Ryon Dayne, and that was probably for the best. It would keep him alive for now, for Emmelyne knew that Jasper would be safer with the man dead. She had no ill will against Ryon Dayne though and he had been good for Stuar. She certainly did not wish to see him die.

Emmelyne’s blue eyes betrayed confusion as Stuar spoke of a plan. He did look older though, much older than his true age and Emmelyne wondered how quickly he was growing up and becoming a man that she could be proud of. “There is no plan, Stuar. I will be a good wife to Jasper Arryn, and a good Queen for the Vale. I will bear him children and heirs and we hope for a long reign,” Emmelyne said softly to her brother. She knew she could be a good queen and she was starting to think Jasper might be a good king as well. And as far as she was concerned she was going all in with Jasper, and devoting herself to his reign and his name. She would work hard to be a good wife.

The news that Ryon had fled stung almost as bad as finding out that his beloved and only sister was set to marry the usurper. The man that had killed their father and eldest brother. Stuar allowed himself only a moment of grief for that, just long enough that his sisters lips pressed against his forehead and then he inhaled. Life had changed in just a few short moments, he’d heard war changed lives but he hadn’t even partaken in it and now everything was upside-down and backwards.

Now Staur would have to enter the adult world of Westeros, where nothing seemed real and everyone was lying. Including himself. He would have to bury his emotions, the true ones, and allow false ones to come through in his everyday life. Nobody could know how miserable he was with how things turned out, including his sister for she did not deserve such a burden. She may know, deep down inside her that he was unhappy, for how couldn’t she, but he wouldn’t tell her or bring it to the forefront and if she asked… he would have to lie about it.

A rock sunk in his gut at that realization.

Stuar shook his head, stoning his emotions. “Nevermind that, he is no longer king” his voice came out neutral, if not a little bored “he is a coward” his heart stung but he didn’t let it show. “Undeserving of the crown or fidelities that he once had” Stuar wanted to take his mailed glove and introduce it to his own face. That’s what he would have done had anyone mutter this words not an hour ago.

The words were hallow, but were said to prove a point. That he accepted the way things were now. He didn’t have to like it, that wasn’t a requirement or even a consideration when it had been decided, but he was expected to comply and so he would. Her words that she would be a good wife and produce the Arryn with heirs were painful but Stuar smiled at his sister as she said them.

You will be an excellent queen” he spoke softly disregarding the rest knowing that was the sole positive thing for the Vale I this moment, that his sister would be Queen. He turned from her in that moment turning back to the map “I won’t keep you any longer dear sister” he added gripping the edges of the table his head down. Too low to be looking at what was on it “I’m sure you must be eager to explain this to others. I love you Emmelyne and will do whatever is necessary for the family. Stay safe.

Emmelyne looked at her brother as he spoke of Ryon, her eyebrows furrowing as she listened to the harsh words that came from Stuar’s mouth. She did not need to hear him speak poorly of the man he squired for, but she needed to know he wouldn’t openly support Ryon Dayne. It did not make it easier for her to hear such harsh words though from her younger brother and she desperately wished this would not be so difficult on the boy, or rather she supposed he was quite a man now. She let her hand gently stroke over his hair for a moment before pulling his head to her and hugging him for a moment. He shouldn’t have been forced to say such things about the honorable man he squired for. Ryon had done nothing wrong.

She saw the smile her brother gave her as she spoke of being a good wife to the Arryn king and giving him heirs, knowing the words certainly could not make her brother happy. She could offer no consolation though, other than that she would find him another knight to squire for, but she did not think now was the time for such a promise, though she made it silently to herself. She would find someone honorable for him to serve under, someone fitting for a Queen’s brother and one Stuar could admire as he had Ryon.

“Thank you, Stuar,” she said with a small smile as he assured her she would be a good queen. She was going to try, and she was going to try to improve the opinion of the King of the Vale if she could. “Stuar, I hope you know I love you deeply as well. And I will always be here for you,” she said to Stuar softly. She did not wish to leave her brother when he seemed so somber, but she would have to for now. She had the rest of her family to speak with and she hoped Stuar would be okay, though she knew deep down he would. She took a step forward and placed a kiss upon his cheek, giving the male a small smile before she decided to leave the tent.
